With a figure of 51.9 Mt ce lignite consumption in 2016 decreased by 2.8 % as compared to the previous year (53.5 Mt ce). With some 171.5 mt, lignite production was 3.7 % lower than the previous years result with different developments in the individual areas. In the Lusatia production reached 62.3 Mt (- 0.3 %). With 17.7 Mt the production in central Germany was lower (- 6 %) than the prior years level. In Rhineland production, at 90.5 Mt, was also lower (- 5 %). 1.1 Mt were excavated in Helmstedt were production was terminated in autumn 2016. In the past year around 90% of the coal production (156 Mt) was used in power stations to generate electricity and district heating.
Concerning lignite products, brown coal dust (- 3.4 %), the production of coke (- 6.5 %) and briquette production (- 5.8 %) decreased. Coal for fluidised circulating beds production increased (+ 4 %) compared to 2015.
The number of workers at the end of 2016, at 19,852, was 892 lower as at the end of 2015. This includes approx 1,300 trainees and approx 5,160 workers in the public power plants of the lignite enterprises. In total in Germany, nearly 70,000 competitive jobs are secured by lignite mining and power generation.
